NORTHOFNOWHERE

[P] Let Me Go

Most found this place too silent, too dense, too suffocating but there were some who found comfort in the limited amount of that certain senses were allowed to work. Redfoot was one of them. The quiet she-wolf passed easily through the forest, paws stepping lightly over snow and rock. The air was still chilled, frigid and though she knew winter was a temporary thing it felt as if it would never end; forever she would be a denizen of the frosty air just like those in the north. Ugh...

She shook herself, dislodging a light dusting of snow that had fallen from the trees above. They were so densely packed that she couldn't even see the sky but she knew that it was midday. The sun's light didn't account for much here... didn't account for much anywhere now with the bitter air.

She found a spot to rest, to meditate and clear her mind of everything. It was a practice she'd found very calming with the volatile woman who had raised her. It was a favorite spot, a tree with a root that sat slightly above the ground. Even in the snow she could see the hump that signaled it to her.

One paw came out to brush away the snow, leaving a bare spot for her to sit on. She did so eagerly and with a contented sigh. Perfect... She sat carefully balanced on her root, ears erect but with eyes closed as she allowed herself to drift away into the forest around her. Listening to all that was going on around her but thinking about nothing.

The more she roamed the forest that Elsynia owned, the more she yearned to see it in spring. The trees were so dense that sunlight could barely seep through. With the foliage gone, what would that be like once greenery began to grow again? Would the forest be plunged in darkness? The thought of it didn't really sit well with Fayre, whose homeland had forests that still allowed sunlight to come through. She loved to play in the sun, bask in it even, and a dark forest held no appeal. Even so, Fayre wanted to see it. Would it be as beautiful as where she grew up?

Food was still scarce, but she had managed to scavenge some a day ago, of a deer that had died of natural causes, for Fayre saw no visible wound. She could hardly believe her luck as she dug in, and soon left nothing behind. Since then, she had been in a better mood, wandering the rest of the Grove, trying to find a good place to live in until spring arrived. She was just turning the corner round a large tree when she saw her: a gray wolf with tinges of blue and russet. She was sitting on a piece of root with her eyes closed. The stranger wore an expression of calm, while Fayre's smirk grew.

"Do you hear spring coming?" Fayre asked almost tauntingly, but she sincerely hoped that the answer would be the affirmative. She could barely wait for the winter sun to go on its way.

The birds chirped, snow fell, the chatter of some far off family of squirrels reached her ears... and then the footfalls. One of her own kind coming from her front and left. She was attuned to the noise, wanting to listen and see if they would continue coming in her direction and they did. Part of her was hoping that they'd turn but she knew it was a futile thought... It was just like the other day when she'd spent her time sleeping near the lake. Another wolf had approached her then despite her fervent thoughts, the same would happen today and likely many more thereafter.

When the footfalls grew closer and finally stopped she knew that she had been seen but her eyes didn't open right away. She doubted she was about to be attacked, that would have taken the form of faster pawsteps and some snarls or growls. This lady, when she spoke, was almost irritating in the fact that her voice was just an inch from being taunting but still nice enough to be considered a valid question. If you were going to tease just be outright with it, then she knew precisely where she stood. "No." The simple answer came before she opened a pale eye and examined the she-wolf before her. Primarily adorned in white with tan cascading down her pelt, her purple eyes held that note of sincerity. Her own green one closed once more as she huffed out, "Just you." It wasn't spoken rudely, just a statement of fact. Her meditation only brought the sounds of the forest and she wasn't going to pretend as if she knew what would bring what. Spring would come when it came.

Fayre scoffed at the nonchalant answer. It was an honesty of a similar kind to hers. While the stranger spoke calmly, Fayre's expression was constantly on the move. She watched as the darker wolf closed her eyes again, seemingly uninterested in her presence. Fayre knew exactly what she was doing, of course, and disturbance wasn't something that was particularly liked by those who wished to have the time to themselves, to meditate. A self-appointed healer in the pack used to do this, and she insisted that it helped to clear the mind and soul, helped one search their path — including many other purposes. Fayre couldn't understand. She had tried once on her own, away from the others. She had tried to search herself, but there was nothing to be searched, because she knew herself well. She tried to use it as a platform in accepting the pack for who they were without resorting to leaving, but no, that did not work either. She left in the end, after all.

Eventually, she gave the stranger one more quick glance before moving on her way. If the stranger wasn't interested in socialising, so was she. While she left, she made sure to do one thing: to step through the forest as quietly as she could, lest she disturbed the stranger again.

exit unless stopped.
